No boot/shutdown splash in Ubuntu Edgy

I had some problems with Ubuntu Edgy. One of the problems I had was that the boot and shutdown splashscreen didn't display. I only got a black screen. This is how I solved this problem:

I had to edit /etc/usplash.conf and change the resolution to 800x600 instead of 1024x768. Then I executed this command at the commandline:
sudo update-initramfs -u

After that, I shut down (saw the splashscreen) and when my Dell Inspiron 2600 booted, I saw the bootsplashscreen also.
